2010-2014    Councilor, Ward 4, Township of Lanark Highlands

Served as an active member of the 7-member Lanark Highlands Township Council. Whereas the previous Council had raised taxes 30% during their 4-year term, with no obvious benefit to the citizens, this Council reduced the rate of tax growth to 2% per year. Improved service levels to the citizens and increased employee satisfaction.

1966-2002                  IBM Canada Ltd.

36 years with IBM, including 30 years as a lst, 2nd and 3rd line manager, in a variety of marketing, product management, planning and control management, and strategy development positions. Actively involved in the ongoing transformation of IBM Canada for over 20 + years. Some key transformational project responsibilities have included:

  • Empowerment: Led a cross-functional taskforce that translated the concept of empowerment into its practical requirements.
  • Organizational Capacity Development: Strategized development related to organizational change and productivity/service improvements.
  • “Think Customer”: Implemented a communications program and recognition initiative to drive cultural change in the administrative and distribution parts of IBM Canada.
  • Customer Relations Department: Created a world-class operation to deal with and resolve customer complaints.
  • Project 80’s Project Office: Managed this key element in driving IBM Canada’s 1979-1984 transformation project; as a result, won the Canada Award for Excellence for Productivity in 1984.
  • IBM Direct Support Facility: Implemented a direction-setting prototype that used an IBM-Customer electronic link as the basis for delivering more effective and timely technical support.

1990-1991                  Public Service’s Canadian Centre for Management Development

Participated in the Canadian Government’s Business-Government Executive Exchange Program.

Co-ordinated two major studies: (1) Human Resource Practices of Leading Large-Scale Canadian Organizations; and (2) Effective Executive Development Practices.

Published papers and presented findings on the two major studies cited above as well as on 360 Feedback, Total Quality Management, and the Continuous Learning Organization. These were all geared to support the Canadian Public Service’s renewal and transformation efforts—PS 2000.

IBM EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

2000-2002                   Manager, BI/VSB PC Sales and GSB Sales + PC IT/WEB Support and PC Marketing

Responsible for PC sales into the Business Individual and Very Small Business Marketplaces as well as all IBM sales into the Small Business Marketplace (1-99 employee size establishments) – Revenue Plan of $307 million. Responsible for overall PC Advertising, budget of $27 million. Responsible for IT and WEB support for the PC business, budget of $14 million.

1999-2000                   Business Unit Executive, IBM Partner Services

Responsible for IBM’s Canadian chain of 27 retail stores, PC sales over the Web and PC sales over the telephone as well as fulfillment services for business partners and customers – Revenue Plan of $175 million. Responsible for overall PC Advertising, budget of $25 million.

Managed a Revenue Plan for PC Options of $220 million, and for Visual Products of $80 million. Responsible for a PC Advertising Budget of $25 million.

CURRENT PROJECT

In 2007, we moved from Markham, Ontario (suburbia) to our current 325-acre farm in the Lanark Highlands, with the intent of creating a family homestead over the few decades.

The objective is to reduce our carbon footprint while increasing our relative self-sufficiency in terms of energy and food production.
